Rich in texture, this portrait often catches it’s viewers off guard. Feeling an element of discomfort, one asked; “Why not paint a smile on the old dear?” My answer was, “To remove the tension from the piece would remove the mystery of the subject. She has a story to tell and the tension causes one to linger long enough to listen.”
