Flowers for Mommy
2007
23” X 27”

The original photo reference from which I worked contained the image of three children leaning on a rail.  The child I chose to paint from this reference was a little boy with the face of a cherub.  Because I wanted to paint him into a scene that complemented his priceless expression, I spent several days creating quick sketches.  I decided to paint the brief but precious moment a boy catches the eye of his mother as he brings her freshly picked flowers.

With little boys, bigger is always better but I chose the sunflowers not for their size but for their symbolism.  With its heart shaped leaves and the meaning of its name, “face turned toward the sun” or in this painting, “son”, the sunflower seemed to be the perfect flower for mommy.

I appreciate art which depicts the fleeting moments in the life of a child.
