Becoming Less
2006
33” X 29”

As I faced an empty canvas, I had but a single scripture in mind; John 3:30.  While wondering where this painting would take me, my husband came in wearing an orange hooded windbreaker and the journey began.

After taking his photo for reference, I made several sketches.   Influenced by Rembrandt’s use of light and the way his people are illuminated against a dark background, I painted my canvas black.  To enhance the mood, I decided to go a step further and create a deep, dark “Rembrandt” color palette.   To create an image strong with texture, I used a Sargent brush to apply the paint.

As you explore this piece, you will find that while the man seems to be decreasing as he fades into the background, Jesus appears to increase as he moves through the man to fill the foreground.

I appreciate art that is composed through a build up of complex textural elements.
