Becoming Less As I faced an empty canvas, I had but a single scripture in mind; John 3:30. While wondering where this painting would take me, my husband came in wearing an orange hooded windbreaker and the journey began. After taking his photo for reference, I made several sketches. Influenced by Rembrandt’s use of light and the way his people are illuminated against a dark background, I painted my canvas black. To enhance the mood, I decided to go a step further and create a deep, dark “Rembrandt” color palette. To create an image strong with texture, I used a Sargent brush to apply the paint. I appreciate art that is composed through a build up of complex textural elements.
