An Angel in Awe
2006
35” x 34”

I was captivated by a child with angelic features.  She was standing on a stool, dressed in a yellow rain jacket, playing in the water.  I was inspired to grab my camera.  After capturing the moment with a Cannon 20D, I took my camera on a field trip to a local nursery.

Back in the studio I mixed a palette to complement the golden hues which were to set the temperature for this painting.  Beginning with a blank golden-brown canvas, I made a rough sketch of an angel in awe of a single rose.  Alternating between large and small brushes, I made quick short, as well as, long sweeping strokes to build up the layers of paint.  The final image is a representation rich in texture.

I appreciate art that uses rich texture to create a specific mood, which plays against the composition of the painting.
